Original Title: Era un dona com les altres
The central point of this novel is unhappiness. Two acquaintances meet at the funeral of an old woman friend, Erènia. As they walk from the church to the cemetery, they engage in a conversation from which we learn how she grew from girl to woman without realising it, how “a couple of pigeons caressing one another by her window awakened in her a kind of thirst that she could never extinguish,” and how she died in odd circumstances. Erènia’s thirst, her inability to quench it, and the constriction and hypocrisy of Catalan social life in the first third of the century are the themes of this novel. However, as is usual in Francesc Trabal, it avoids melodrama, psychology and truculence, making the action pass through the fine sieve of irony.
