The Way to Form
Goethe, Webern, BalthasarRequest more information
Original Title: El camino hacia la forma
Thanks to Goethe and, in particular, his essay The Metamorphosis of Plants, Webern and Balthasar learned to contemplate the original phenomenon which would come to inspire both the composer’s mature, exceptionally beautiful music which still speaks to us today, and the theologist’s extraordinary philosophical work. This enduring phenomenon is the form or figure, the organised whole or Gestalt. For Goethe, Webern and Balthasar deep understanding of the being depends on perception of the indivisible figure, and only the beauty of artistic forms are able to convey this conclusively, infusing us with the certainty that we are contemplating the expression, the incarnation and finally the revelation of the One, of God.
«A book of tremendous merit, because it unambiguously lands naturally on a concept as difficult to grasp and systematize as that of beauty».
Carlos Sandúa (director of Radio Clásica at RNE)
«A magnificent book, a school of knowing how to look at what exists, a development of the intuition of the splendor of being, of which Saint Thomas spoke».
