Original Title: La primera pedra
The First Stone is the story of an electrician who plays football and is the lover of a married woman. He accepts his role as a reserve, not just when it comes to sport, but also in his role in the family, at work and with love. With a vision that is both lucid and tender, Sergi Pàmies observes how these circumstances make his protagonist coexist, in succession, with loyalty to the family, with enthusiasm for a mariachi and with the drudgery of his work. Pàmies’s daring, tight prose takes to its limit all of its ability to suggest and makes this story of contained passions proceed without so much as a hint of blarney. Every detail impresses and convinces by the minuteness with which it is described. In this novel, Pàmies shows us a world in which the commonplace leaves off being an unnecessary resource, becoming instead the point of departure.
