Original Title: La atraccion del abismo

The Attraction of the Abyss is a journey through Romantic painting and landscape. For the Romantic painters, landscape does not just involve a physical frame that can be reached easily. For them it is the stage on which is played out the tension, that is often dramatic, between nature and the human spirit. Starting out from the work of Friedrich, Turner, Füssli, Piranesi and Escher, Rafael Argullol reveals to us the clues to the Romantic landscape and to the tragic spirit of Romanticism. Beginning from the standpoint of what the author calls “a subjective imaginary museum,” he links Romantic landscape painting to the landscapes that preceded it, most especially as seen in the work of Renaissance artists – Da Vinci, Raphael – and also with more contemporary painters, such as Munch, Van Gogh, Max Ernst and Magritte, hinting at the possibility of analysing the development of Western culture from the point of view of the varied modes of pictorial representation.
