Original Title: Voces contemporáneas

Contemporary Voices derives from two beliefs. The first: that literary history, conceived of in terms of evolution, is a fallacy. That is the reason why what I propose is not a history of literature, but a panorama of the past thirty years of Spanish narrative. The other belief is that criticism is a territory that is open and in which very different concepts have their place. The ideal criticism, to which I aspire in this book, is the criticism that takes advantage of the many different possibilities, without any particular one seeming too visible, a criticism that does not put forward the critic’s knowledge beyond what is really pertinent, a criticism that observes correspondences or identifications, but not influences, a criticism that can take in the present and the future, but not the past, a criticism written with the aim of communicating, not of closing doors. A criticism that is eclectic, flexible and pleasant. One that wishes to be read.
